Helping people, one BITE at a time!
Before Christmas we were able to deliver meals to MANY seniors in our community and provide them a set of meals for the week. Through the smiles, tears, thank-you’s and sweet messages- our hearts are full of gratitude that we were able to meet such wonderful people and see the joy it brought to them! With that said, we want to keep this going to be able to help our seniors in our community. Help us be able to feed our senior community one bite at a time!
Over the past couple of years Simple Bites has met some amazing giving people who have dedicated their lives to take care of the elderly. As we became more involved, we realized the issues of the forgotten elderly population. Most people would not even know this problem exists until they are exposed to it or find their elderly relatives or friends in this same situation.
Fixed incomes, deceased spouses, no family near, kids living out of state or no relationship, physical and mental ailments, no transportation are just a few reasons why they are in vulnerable positions but what they all have in common is they want to stay independent and transition gracefully. Poor nutrition, including malnutrition, are at greater risk and severity of pressure injuries, loss of bone and muscle mass/strength, frailty, reduced functional capacity and greater care needs. They are also at heightened risk for healthcare-associated infections and mortality in hospital. Sadly, many are surviving on crackers. Fixed incomes are not stretching very far in our current economy.
Yes, there are options with supplemented/free meal programs- but there are so many people who don’t qualify for the help and fall through the cracks. We may not be able to solve the problem, but we can help! For every $100 in donations, we will take a box of food containing breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack items.
Last year, Simple Bites spearheaded a coat drive which put brand new coats on over 40 elementary children thanks to our followers and friends. This year, we want to help feed the elderly who are falling through the cracks.
For every $100 we collect we will feed a senior in our community who doesn’t qualify for assistance. We are another set of eyes who enter the home, help them put their food away, show them the heating instructions and just visit. Sometimes we are the only people they have talked to in weeks. We love hearing their stories and seeing the glimmer in their eye to feel like someone cares. If we notice any problems or additional assistance needed, we have many friends in the industry who we contact to get their needs met.
